On Tuesday 28th March the Moa Syndicate went out for their stay at the Tapu Te Ranga Marae in Island Bay. Unfortunately the weather wasn't so flash but we were still able to take part in some great cultural experiences.
Our biggest THANK YOU to the fabulous parents from our class - Angela, Jeremy, Brandie and Rose who were able to take time out to come and help. These trips aren't possible without the support and involvement of parents, and you were all a huge help.

The Marae
The Beach
On the Tuesday we went for a walk to Island Bay beach and had a swim. It was pretty chilly but didn't stop us from swimming out to the pontoon and jumping off the wall.
The Hangi
The hangi was the main event of the marae trip and the preparation for this took most of our time. On Tuesday it was all about the vege prep. Lots of handy people came through to help peel potatoes and kumara. We needed around 200 of each vege done so it took a lot of the afternoon to do. While some were doing this, others went out to help with getting the wood ready for the hangi pit.
The next morning we woke at 5am to go out and watch the hangi fire being lit. This was a great way to start the day. The fire heats the steel and the wood is placed strategically to ensure that it falls down into the pit rather than falling to the side. The fire then burns for approx 3 hours before the pit is dug over. This was incredibly hot work that the men on the trip had to do.
The food is then placed in to big metal baskets and lowered into the hangi pit and covered with wet sheets and sacks and a tarpaulin. This helps to keep the steam in that is produced from the heat and the wet sacks. This is what cooks the food.
Dirt is then piled on top to block any steam escaping and to keep the heat trapped inside.
Hanging out
There was plenty of time while we were at the marae to just hang out and spend time with our friends, playing cards, kicking around a ball or just finding a quiet spot (if you were lucky) to read. It was a nice break from the busy times at school and home for a bit.
